Trace or print out some fruit from the book, have kids color it and cut out items.  1 apple, 2 pears, 3 plumbs, 4 strawberries.  Then have them glue the pieces to a large piece of paper.  You can also easily create a caterpillar to keep track of the books your reading. Here, here are larger fruit cut outs.

Read Brown Bear, Brown Bear, what do you see?  Once again hands on is best.

Color the animals, do you remember what color they were in the story? Print

Reading / Talking

I've been seeing a lot of comments on various articles about trying to teach a child to read before they can speak well and the damages that causes.   I'm not sure how accurate this is but it has driven me harder to practice verbal skills.  Have children repeat with both simple songs and while reading very simple stories.  I think this teaches them not only to verbalize what they see but also to recognize words on a page.  Ambleside has a wonderful list of book that we will start to enjoy probably more so in the following year (age 4).  Also a daily story time would also be very beneficial.
